Powertrain and Engine

For the 2012 model year, the 2012 Nissan Versa features an all-new platform and drivetrain from Nissan.  From reducing the size of engine and transmission, reducing the number of component parts and reducing platform weight, the new Versa weighs about 150 pounds less than previous models and offers far more power and speed.

The 2012 Versa is powered by an improved 1.6-liter HR16DE 4-cylinder engine.  The engine is rated at 109 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 107 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm. The Versa Sedan 1.6 S is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and other models include a  Xtronic CVT™ transmission.

The improved powertrain and lighter components contribute to an improved fuel economy.  Initial estimates for the 2012 Versa are 30 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined with the CVT transmission and 27 mpg city, 36 mph highway and 30 mpg combined with the 5-speed manual transmission.

Safety

Standard safety features found on every 2012 Versa Sedan include the Nissan Advanced Air Bag, seat-mounted driver and front passenger side-impact supplemental air bags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection, Electric Power Steering and power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes and an Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist.
